How to push through pain and make your PT proud

If you want to be fitter, you have to train harder. That’s a fact. But, if you feel like you are reaching your limit and can’t push through, you have to teach yourself how to embrace, enjoy and even become one with your PT and the pain they inflict.

Pushing through the pain is all about being the boss of your own brain. To take a step in the right direction try the following tips and tricks.

Keep your eye on the prize

What are you here for? Washboard abs? A Kardashian booty? Envisage what your end goal is and nothing else. Let the pain shrink away in comparison to your determination.

Fake it till you make it

Imagine the best looking human you have ever seen is standing in front of you. What would you do? You would lift that goddam deadlift, and make it look easy. Keep pushing like it is easy and you may even convince yourself.  Better still, find a personal trainer who makes you want to impress them more than your partner.

Make sure you have a top personal trainer

Find yourself a personal trainer who will push you through. Are you really going to back out when it hurts if hard-earned money is on the table? Good personal trainers will also have a few of their own tricks to keep the pain out of your brain.

Tune out

Research consistently finds that listening to music distracts athletes from pain. If your working out alone, get some high tempo tunes (somewhere between 120 and 140 beats per minute) and let them take over your mind.

Change it up

If you find your trainer is making you do the same workout over and over you can slip into dwelling on the pain rather than focusing on the goal. Experiment with things like TRX or even StepMill. Don’t give yourself a chance to think about the pain.

Make your mantra

A mantra is a great way to really pump you up. It can be anything from ‘I think I can, I think I can’ to ‘pain is weakness leaving the body’. Whatever you feel works for you, and reminds you of why you are at the gym and what you want.

Be realistic

Set yourself achievable goals and stick to them. Knowing you are only a few reps away from smashing your goal is a major motivator.

Get lost in the numbers

Monitor exercise intensity, pace, heart rate and time to both distract yourself and serve as a constant reminder of just how far you’ve come.

If you still don’t have a trainer, find one now.

Training with a qualified PT is always great because they can help you pass those pain barriers by either distracting you or motivating you. If they are good you’ll be amazed at just how much you push your limit. A study done by Kansas State University even went as far as saying that working out with a plus one “increased intensity and workout time by as much as 200%”

Dangle the carrot

Think of time in the gym as deposits into the fitness bank. The more time you spend, and the harder you go, the more you can reward yourself. Rewards can be anything from a cheat meal to a new pair of kicks.

Pushing through pain is never going to be easy. It will always be hard to carry on when your body is screaming ‘WHY!? WHAT DID I EVER DO TO DESERVE THIS?’ But the rewards are more than worth it.
